Afraha High School was started as a Harambee school in 1964-1965.  It was officially opened by the late President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta on 5th June 1966.  It was agreed to source for funds through Harambee and make Afraha a public school and open it to the Nakuru community.

The school was owned by Afraha Education Society, and later by Afraha Education Development co. Ltd was registrered by the Ministry of Education as Afraha Secondary School.  In 1984 Afraha Education Development co. Ltd was split to form Langalanga Secondary School as a public school and Afraha High School as a private school.

From 1994-1995 the school experienced management/administrative difficulties because of consistent interference in the teaching/learning activities by warring parties who continuously invaded the school.

On learning this matter the MOE took the case to the attorney General Chamebers for investigation.  The government after investigation decided to register the school on 4th January 2002 as a public school.
